Patricia Ryan and Yellowstone (2.6.08)
An appreciative Rocky Mountain College audience enjoyed a performance by one of their own Wednesday night when Patricia Ryan and her band, Yellowstone, presented a free concert in Losekamp Hall.
On campus, absent her stage name, she is better know as Tricia Fjelstad, and rarely recognized for whom she is when she appears on stage. That’s when she becomes a lead singer belting out Country Western songs.
“I’m not normally a CW fan, but she was fantastic,” said one student. “She had people on their feet dancing. She was just plain good.”
Patricia, a junior at RMC, is not a novice to entertainment. She has sung professionally for 10 years, and managed to fit that career in with an active high school life that included competing in golf and basketball. She was also active in Family Career and Country Leaders of America (FCCLA), which focused on a campaign to discourage teenagers from drinking and driving.
Besides performing with some CW stars, she’s even had the chance to show her talent to one of the major CW stars, Garth Brooks. Patricia has also met and performed with other CW legends like Charley Pride and Lee Ann Womac. She has also opened for many Grand Ole Opry Artists such as; Jack Greene, Asleep at the Wheel, the Hager Twins, Margo Smith, Barbara Fairchild, Jim Ed Brown, Jeannie Seely, and Stonewall Jackson.
“Patricia came to Rocky as a young woman from rural Montana but with big dreams. She has begun to achieve those dreams. A major in Communication Studies, she brings her tremendous experience to every topic. When we study media diversity issues in our Mass Media course, she understands how difficult it is to break into the record business because she is trying hard to do so. When we study copyright, she understands how important copyright laws are to protecting artists' work, said Dr. Vickie Christie, Professor Communication Studies.
“We put together a major for her that makes sense and tailors to her future interests. While she will major in communication, she will do extra work, like a communication and music business internship in China, that will prepare her for what I think is a great career and life.”
“Rocky is a special place,” Patricia said.
And students like Patricia Ryan Fjelstad help make it special.
