Ice Climbing (3.17.12)

Rocky Mountain College has an outstanding outdoor recreation department that takes students on trips all over the Western US, but more specifically they make trips (almost weekly) to great locations within an hour (or so) of campus. On Saturday March 17, 2012 RMC photographer Dave M. Shumway tagged along for one such trip.

The climbing party drove to Red Lodge, MT in the morning, then they made the approach, before starting to climb Rock Creek Falls (rated WI2+ with sections of 3). The elevation of the falls is just under 9,000' the cars were parked at 7,099', thus the snow covered approach, with each member of the party had climbing gear, food, winter clothing and more to carry, was significant work. (the photographers pack weighed 51lbs.)

The group ranged from experienced to novice climbers, but everyone finished the climb successfully (safely up and back) and enjoyed the beautiful surroundings of the Beartooth Mountains.
