On Tuesday, March 24th the Rocky Mountain College Battlin’ Bears won the 2009 NAIA Men’s Basketball National Championship.  It was the first NAIA championship of its kind in the long, proud history of Rocky Mountain College athletics (Rocky’s men’s ski racing team won the 2005 and 2007 USCSA National Championship.)<br />

Evan Hopkins, a 6-5 red shirt freshman from Thompson Falls, Montana, is a member of that team.  A 2007 graduate of Thompson Falls High School, Evan split time this season between Rocky’s Junior Varsity and Varsity squads.  He appeared in 12 games this season at the varsity level and logged 53 minutes played.

Anthony Allen, a 6-8 junior from Fresno, California, is a member of that team.  Anthony transferred to Rocky this season from the College of the Sequoias in Visalia, California.  In his first season as a Battlin’ Bear, Anthony started all 37 games for Rocky.  He finished the season averaging 9.4 points per game and 5.6 rebounds per game, while shooting 50% from the field.

Nate Richardson, a 5-6 junior guard from Montclair, California is a junior college transfer from Citrus Community College in Glendora, California. Nate started all 37 games for the Battlin’ Bears this season.  As the starting point guard, Nate averaged 12.0 points per game and a team high 4.4 assists per game.  At the conclusion of the national tournament, Nate was awarded with the tournament’s ‘Hustle Award’ and also earned a spot on the All-Tournament team.

Devin Uskoski, a 6-6 senior from Brush Prairie, Washington, is a member of that team. Devin finished his brilliant career in a Battlin’ Bear uniform as the MVP of the national tournament.  His 24 point, 20 rebound performance in the championship game gave him his 5th double-double of the tournament and his NAIA leading 29th of the season.  For the season, Devin led the Bears in scoring (17.5 points per game) and rebounding (11.7 rebounds per game.)  He was also named to the NAIA 3rd Team All-American squad.  For his career, Devin totaled 2047 points, 1304 rebounds and had 70 double-doubles; all are Rocky Mountain College career records.

For the season, he averaged 3.4 points and 3.2 rebounds per game, while shooting a team-high 63% from the field.
